Pause and add spaciousness to your life.

Last week the Universe whispered “Pause” to me. It felt like the message was shouted at me, but I’ve seen many messages for myself and others, and relatively speaking, this was a whisper. I developed an issue with my neck and was pretty much non-functional for six days. With a little help from my friends, I parsed through the message and have come to understand that this wasn’t your ordinary pause – one where you just stop for a few days. The message was to re-imagine my life and create more spaciousness in it.

What type of spaciousness do I need?

I’ve been slowly streamlining my processes recently. And rearranging work so that it’s not taking up time on the weekend. I already had an inkling that some things needed to shift. But apparently, I wasn’t moving fast enough on that idea. So I started thinking on a larger scale. What exactly did it mean to create spaciousness in my life?

My physical space has been the opposite of spacious. For the past five months, a third of my house has been blocked off due to a bathtub leak which resulted in mold. It’s taken quite a while to get that remediated and to obtain the go-ahead from my insurance company to schedule the contractors. In addition to the blocked-off area, some of the rest of my space is full of things that had to be removed from the impacted rooms. In a couple of weeks, the renovation should begin. That will give me more space for sure. But I don’t think that’s the main point of my whisper.

There’s also a spaciousness of time during the day. I’m pretty good a getting tasks to fit timeframes. Sometimes I’ve gotten seemingly immense tasks done in very small amounts of time. On the other hand, I’ve discovered that I use time the way many people use storage space – however much you have, you use it all (and then maybe cram a little more in!) This is definitely one area to make some changes in.

Space to imagine

Then I took another step back and considered the bigger picture. It isn’t just my usage of time, I need to create space for more opportunities, both personal and professional. I can find ways to declutter my task list and schedule. But decluttering just means getting rid of unnecessary things. I’m looking for spaciousness. Getting rid of the superfluous is certainly part of the process, but the goal is to create space for expansion. To shift my attention from “getting it all done” to having time and space to welcome in new and exciting projects and relationships. I want to feel like there’s room to stretch in all possible ways. I want to establish a regular practice of dreaming big.

What do I want?

One of the regular questions I ask clients is about what they want to be true for them. That’s in the context of a situation they consider to be a problem. I am very content with my life AND I now see that it’s time for me to establish a practice of thinking about how it could be even better. I don’t believe we are here to keep doing the same thing over and over again. To feel truly alive, we need new experiences and challenges – we need to grow.

So as this year unfolds, I will be spending some time creating the space for me to do that. I’m sure I’ll be finding some old beliefs that are limiting me, and I’ll change those along the journey. If you find yourself pursuing dreams and feel blocked in some way, I’m happy to help you clear those! Book a session here.
