My 30-second elevator speech is, “I help people rewrite subconscious, self-limiting beliefs. Clients come to me for three main reasons: emotions that are making life uncomfortable, conscious goals that are not being achieved, and physical symptoms of stress.”
Over the years, I learned that people aren’t clear what I mean by the physical symptoms of stress. Let’s explore to gain clarity.
Stress causes symptoms
Most people understand that stress can manifest itself in multiple ways. I view the body as an instrument panel. If there is discomfort or malfunctioning, I see that as the body’s attempt to let you know that something needs to change. Louise Hay’s books, like You Can Heal Your Life, include symptoms and recommended affirmations to address them. I prefer Hay’s book Heal Your Body because it includes a section on spinal misalignments and has affirmations associated with each vertebra. Hay isn’t alone in her thinking—many other sources also link body areas to beliefs. For instance, most of the material I have read indicates that back issues are frequently about a lack of support, and joint pain is often related to flexibility and dealing with change.
What message is your body sending?
When clients come to me for help with symptoms, I ask, “What message is your body sending you?” Sometimes the answer comes quickly, but not always. If it doesn’t, we explore together. Following are a few common symptoms:
Migraines
On numerous occasions, I’ve been in a meeting or conference and heard someone say they had a migraine and had to leave. I usually offer to see if I can help. We go to a secluded area and determine what belief(s) is causing the pain and then rewrite that to a more supporting belief. Usually, in less than ten minutes, the pain has gone, which enables the person to stay and participate in the event we were attending. It’s always amazing that the mind-body connection can be that strong, and change can be that quick!
Weight
People carry unwanted weight for a whole host of reasons—many that have nothing to do with the number of calories they consume or burn in a day. Some common reasons include fear of being seen, stuffing down emotions, resistance to something or someone, and carrying around an emotional weight. Did you know that sometimes the subconscious equates “weight” with “wait?” I worked with someone who had put her life on hold for several years. She carried weight she couldn’t shed, no matter what she tried. We created new beliefs for her subconscious about it being time for her to be her top priority. A few weeks later, she let me know that her weight was coming off with no change in her eating habits. Her body told her to stop waiting to take care of herself!
Reactive Responses
Many people suffer seasonal reactions to pollen or who always get a cold or the flu at a particular time of the year. I have found that this is often tied to a belief that expects these symptoms based on the calendar. Sometimes, the reaction is due to a subconscious connection between the substance (for instance, ragweed) and something disturbing that happened in that person’s life when that substance was prevalent. If that belief is changed, the reaction goes away.
Sciatica
Louise Hay connects sciatica with feeling insecure and unsafe. I’ve had multiple clients come to me for this specific issue. One of them had symptoms so severe that she often could not get out of bed. One of the new beliefs that she created was “I am fully supported.” She ended up needing deep sleep for several days after her session (not a typical experience). But when I followed up with her a few days after our session, she wrote: “When I woke each time my back (sciatica) hurt from too much sleep, but today I woke up with zero pain! If I think about my sciatica a lot, it hurts a little. For the most part, this is the best I’ve felt in months.”
Conclusion
People who live with discomfort and/or mobility issues may think nothing can positively affect the situation. And that is not what I have seen with myself or my clients. You deserve to feel good and to be able to move freely. Find out what your body is trying to tell you! I’d be happy to help. Book a session here.
